From the start of 2025, we launched a school-wide Roots & Shoots program at G.I.S.!
Roots & Shoots, a youth action initiative by the Jane Goodall Institute, empowers young people to create positive change in their communities. This program was inspired by one of our students, who had the incredible opportunity to attend a lecture and meet Dr. Jane Goodall in San Francisco. Motivated by this experience, she took the initiative to bring Roots & Shoots to G.I.S.
This year, we hosted a bake sale filled with delicious multicultural treats! The money raised went to support our National Parks.
We also visited Seward Park in Seattle to help clean up the environment. We collected an impressive five large bags of trash—the largest item being a life vest and the smallest, tiny pieces of gum. Students were surprised by how much litter was scattered throughout the park. It helped them realize that even small actions—like picking up trash—can make a big difference. They felt proud knowing they were contributing to a cleaner, healthier planet.
We wrapped up the year with a student-led Fun Fair—all to raise funds to help the Earth! From face painting and braiding to a puppet show, crafts, and more, students led the way with creativity, purpose, and fun. All proceeds will support Friends of the Earth International, helping protect our planet one action at a time. We had an amazing time!
