Beyond the Classroom

At G.I.S, learning goes far beyond the walls of the classroom. Students engage in experiences that broaden their perspectives and connect them to the world around them.

FIELD TRIPS

Several times each year, students visit cultural, scientific, technological, and environmental institutions to bring classroom learning to life.
Some of our past field trips: Salmon Hatchery, Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture, Microsoft Accessibility Lab, Pacific Science Center, Lake Washington Symphony Orchestra, Bellevue Botanical Garden

EXTENDED LEARNING TRIPS

  • 4th Grade – IslandWood (Bainbridge Island, WA): A two-night environmental education program that fosters critical thinking, scientific investigation, and a deeper understanding of how our actions affect people and the planet. See more
  • 5th Grade – Antigua Green School (Antigua, Guatemala): A week-long cultural exchange where students join local classes and explore a variety of topics through collaborative projects. See More

ROOTS & SHOOTS at G.I.S

Inspired by a 2024 G.I.S student encounter with Dr. Jane Goodall, the school initiated its own Roots & Shoots project—part of a global youth initiative that promotes respect for all living things and encourages action to protect people, animals, and the environment.

With the mentorship of a teacher, students take part in beach clean-ups, bake sales, and other fun events to raise funds for national parks and wildlife organizations. In doing so, they are not only making a difference but also inspiring others in their school, homes, and communities.
