Special Interest Week -2025

Last week, we hosted a school-wide Special Interest Week, where parents, friends, and special guests shared their expertise with students on a variety of topics. (See Video Below)

Jessie and her helper Brittany gave an inspiring presentation on AI’s role in accessibility, particularly for the blind. Jessie, who was born blind, works at Microsoft’s AI Lab, improving products for visually impaired users.

Pavel, a GIS dad, introduced students to sailing, covering boat parts, safety, and exciting adventures on the water.

Chris, another GIS dad, taught 1st-5th graders about the skeletal system and orthopedics, including how bones grow and how to make soft casts.

Nico, a 2nd grader, and his family created an incredible video featuring his Tío Agustín, who taught students about almond farming—from tree growth to harvesting and uses.

Jacob from Iron Bee Apiary educated students on bees’ vital role as pollinators, sustainable honey harvesting, and safe beekeeping. Students even got to taste fresh, local honey!

Coach Colleen from Alphagymnastics shared the history of gymnastics and led interactive physical activities. A GIS student demonstrated her hard-earned skills for older students.

Liz, a GIS mom, discussed rockets, space exploration, and Blue Origin. Students filled out cards to be sent to space!

Laura, another GIS mom, led engaging sessions on leadership, helping students identify their own “superhero” leadership qualities. Students learned what leadership means, what qualities are found in good leaders, and how to foster these qualities.

Ileana , also a GIS mom, introduced students to product design, explaining the journey from idea to launch.

Zuly, a Spanish voice-over actress, taught students about voice acting and let them try recording character voices—teachers joined the fun too!

We are incredibly grateful to all who shared their passions and expertise, helping inspire these amazing learners. Thank you for making this week so special!
