Elena Kazanjian has a Washington State certification in elementary education, grades K-8th. She started teaching in 2015 at the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF), where she taught filmmaking and worked to develop curriculum for their educational programs. Since moving back to Seattle, Elena has completed her Master’s in Teaching at Seattle University and taught 5th grade at Phantom Lake Elementary School in the Bellevue school district.

Elena is passionate about environmental education and integrating the arts across content areas. She also enjoys curriculum development and working to ensure that all students feel represented, engaged, and challenged by the content they engage with in the classroom.

Elena believes in building a strong relationship with each student so that she can tailor her instruction to their needs and interests. Elena’s goal as an educator is to stimulate creativity, critical thinking, compassion, problem solving, and joy within her students. She is thrilled to be a part of the Global Idea School team because she feels her goals align with those of the school community. Elena also believes in the importance of bilingual education and wishes she had gone to a school like GIS when she was a child.

Elena lives in Seattle with her partner and the two dogs they brought back from Guatemala. She enjoys spending time with her family, being outside, making music, and gardening. Elena also enjoys taking trips to Canada to visit her younger sister, aka her best friend.
